1988

THE BIRTH OF MARIANS

Born and raised in Chilaw, Sri Lanka, Nalin Perera schooled at St. Mary’s College. His life took a turn in 1988 when he became the head prefect of his school and he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a musician and formed a band with few of his school mates and named it “Marians” with the help of late Rev. Bro. Alosious who was the school principle at the time. The first concert of Marians was held on the 11th of February 1988 at Sudasuna auditorium, Nalin Perera being first bass guitarist of the band. Wisharada Edward Jayakody attended the concert as the chief guest. He stated that Marians was one of the best performing bands he had seen amongst other school bands  of Sri Lanka.

DEBUT ALBUM

Marians was given the opportunity to record their first audio album from ‘Rathnasiri Record Bar Ja Ela’ in form of a cassette tape at the time. “Marians Sangeetha Naade Vol. 1” was the name of their debut album. There were 5 songs composed by Mr. Santy, a popular songwriter and melody composer of the era.

LIVE CONCERTS

After the release of the debut album and with the overgrowing fanbase, the band was given many opportunities to perform outdoor concerts which were high in demand during this decade. The second album “Marians Sangeetha Naade Vol. 2” was released with the same producer. It was a ‘Party time Non-Stop' type album.

FIRST APPEARANCE ON LIVE TELEVISION

Marians made their first appearance on television on ITN this year. With the help of all the musically talented members of the band “Sangeetha Raawaya” a new album was released with 12 songs.

1992

RISE IN POPULARITY

With ever-rising popularity of the band this year, the producers of the first two albums requested to release another ‘Non-Stop’ album called “Marians Sangeetha Naade Vol. 3”. All the music concerts that were performed were labeled as “Marians Naade”. All albums were able to successfully break sales records throughout the country.

FIRST OVERSEAS TOUR

Marians got the first chance of touring overseas to Dubai. It was successful first-time concert experience out of Sri Lanka.


1995

MIDDLE EASTERN TOURS

Marians successfully toured in the middle east and formed a great fan base in countries like Dubai, Qatar and Kuwait. A new album called “Prema Nagare” was released after a 3-year hiatus of releasing albums. During this period Marians was a pop sensation amongst many fans appearing on Television, Magazine Covers, Newspaper Articles…etc. It could be easily identified as the year they were at the peak of their popularity.

ASIA PACIFIC TOURS

Marians expanded their global reach in the APAC region completing successful tours in Japan, Korea and Singapore.

MARIANS RECORDING STUDIO CHILAW

MARIANS successfully opened a fully functional recording studio using analog technology in Chilaw. Nalin Perera was the recording engineer at the time. This was great milestone in the journey of Nalin Perera and Marians.

10 YEARS OF MARIANS

On marking the 10th anniversary of Marians, Nalin Perera took an initiative and organized a 10th Anniversary Concert and donated to St. Mary’s College, Chilaw to help facilitate the first computer room in the college.

FIRST ALBUM RECORDING AT MARIANS RECORDING STUDIO CHILAW

It took 5 years after opening the Marians Recording Studio, for the release of the album called “Komodu Gediya” in which the songs were recorded and mixed at the studio by Nalin Perera. With the consistent demand for more albums Marians made the most of being able to fully create and compose new music in their own studio unlike previous times. 15 songs were created out of which only 12 were released with the album.

MARIANS WORLD TOUR

This year once again marks as a huge milestone when Marians went on global tour in the United States, Europe and the Middle East and performed 23 concerts making a record as the only band in Sri Lanka to date to have done a world tour of 03 months.

AUSTRALIAN TOURS

Marians got their first opportunity to tour in the land down under with a growing fan base in Melbourne Which has now grown into a fan base of thousands.

MARIANS SOUND GEAR

The Marians Sound Gear, which was launched in 2004, is highly equipped with modern sophisticated high end and professionally maintained sound reinforcement gear, which delivers a clear and smooth sound to their audiences.

CHANGE

Having done countless number of outdoor concerts featuring guest artists for almost 17 years, Marians felt the need to make a change and craved for more musical satisfaction. This is when another album called “Ahata Cool” was released.  What made “Ahata Cool” different from other albums was the different types of music styles/genres used in the album.  Marians then performed their very first unplugged show at Sirasa FM studio outdoor premises and it was also telecasted on Sirara TV.

MARIANS UNPLUGGED

Nalin Perera had a strong need to change the quality of music he wanted to deliver to his audiences. This brings “Marians Unplugged” to the world, a musically rich concert bringing out the best of the talents of all the band members which became a sold-out concert with the first concert itself. The Sri Lankan audience eagerly embraced this new concept and Marians received invitations from organizers from all over the country to conduct more “Marians Unplugged” concerts in the country. This new concept helped the band reach out to a niche audience who specifically appreciated and enjoyed high quality. Marians gradually stopped playing outdoor concerts featuring multiple guest artists and moved to playing more indoor unplugged concerts.

20 YEARS OF MARIANS AND CLARENCE UNPLUGGED

Marians celebrated their 20th Anniversary at BMICH with a mega concert called “Marians Miyesi Mantra” which was filled with a variety of entertainment showcasing the super talents of Marians to their loyal fans.

Due to the high demand for the Marians Unplugged Concerts, Nalin Perera decided introduce a new concept and introduced Clarence Unplugged in 2008. The Clarence Unplugged concert which features songs of late legendary Mr. Clarence Wijewardane helped Marians touch more people’s hearts especially the ones who were fans of the 70’s era.

INTRODUCING JBL LINE ARRAY TO SRI LANKA

Marians was always identified for how they prioritized high quality sounds and Nalin Perera always always wanted to improve the system with new technology. He was able to bring down the brand-new sounds system “JBL Line Array” introducing the digital console for the very first time in Sri Lanka. As an artist and a band leader it was the biggest achievement in his life. It was the talk of the town. At that time Marians had the dignity of having the best sound system in the country.

MARIANS STUDIOS NEGOMBO

One of Nalin Perera’s greatest visons was to have a fully equipped recording studio with the highest technology in the country. That dream came true in 2012 when he opened the biggest studio complex equipped with state-of-the-art multi-track recording facilities powered by AVID high definition 5.1 surrounds. The studio is capable of accommodating a 15-member orchestra and does live music postproductions, cinematic music productions and dubbing. This studio was opened by late veteran artist Pandith Amaradeva.

25 YEARS OF MARIANS

Marians celebrated their 25th Anniversary at Museasus Auditorium with new concert called “Marians Acoustica”. The speciality of this concert was having extra players of brass and strings and enhancing the musical experience for all the fans who witnessed it. Marians always experimented and changed their style wanting to introduce new concepts to the music industry of Sri Lanka.

CLARENCE UNPLUGGED VOL. 2

Due to the popular demand received for Clarence Unplugged concerts, Marians introduced “Clarence Unplugged Vol. 2” at museaus auditorium. And there on successfully were able to perform more concerts called “Milton Unplugged”, “CT Unplugged” and, ‘MS Unplugged” bringing back the music of all these late legendary musicians to all music lovers of Sri Lanka.

30 YEARS OF MARIANS

Marians completed 3 decades and wanted to do something very special to mark this milestone of their journey. With all the creative and musical experience, the band gained in the 30 years, “Marians Thaala” was introduced to celebrate the 30th Anniversary. Marians broke a record by having 02 back to back “Marians Thaala” concerts and was immensely grateful for the love of all their fans who made this possible being an extremely new concept. Both concerts were sold out within 4 days.
